1994 cabriolet engine shuts off when shifted to park or neutral

Sounds like some issue with the neutral safety switch..which is supposed to keep the starter from engaging in P or N....the first thing to check is your ignition switch. When they fail (the housings crack) all kinds of weird electrical issues happen. Your switch may be killing the #15 circuit rather than #50.
Do get a new switch OEM VW/Audi/Porsche. The aftermarket switches like URO and Meyle are very poor quality. Part number 4A0905849B available OEM on the Bay for about $35

You do not need to remove the steering wheel. Remove the top plastic cover piece between the steering wheel gauge cluster. Two philips screws on the bottom plastic cover need to be removed and then remove the top plastic cover. You can leave the bottom cover in place. This gives you access to the 2 screws that hold the gauge cluster in the dash. Unscrew these and unplug the cluster..take care as those plastic tabs holding tabs on the cluster/dash can be brittle.Remove the instrument cluster. Walk the cluster out from behind the steering wheel. You will see the ignition switch behind the key cylinder. It actually has 1 tab on each slide of the switch which slide into metal tracks. At the end of the tracks (toward the firewall) are 2 globs of red sealer, chip this stuff off and underneath are set screws that hold the ignition switch in place. Use a fathead to loosen them, Unplug the wiring harness connector in back of the old switch and remove then reinstall the new switch. If you break or find the plastic tabs broken on the instrument cluster use some JB Weld and some small flat washer to repair the tabs..See the PDF attached for some details. Allow about an hour for the repair.

You could leave the battery connected..not usually recommend..but if you are careful around the harness and ignition switch no problems.
If you need the radio code..you will need your VIN and radio serial number. Contact your Audi dealer..although I heard that AUDI USA may help retrieve the codes on older Audis too.
