Default Air Intake Modifications...?

I think it is time I replace my air filter...

I'm going to forget about the cone. I don't believe there are 'real world' performance benefits.

I have read of a way to improve the air intake by replacing the air intake tube with a larger one to improve the flow (on 20v.org). Has anyone done this (or anything similar) ? Is it a worthwhile modification to do?

Would a K&N panel filter adjust the engine note in any way at all? I must admit, the noise the cone filter produces is nice (IMHO)...

Just interested in your views...

Many thanks. Best regards,

Obli

I did the puffy-hose replacement on my 20v before I got an open element filter. Did it help? Dunno, it may have, it definately looks better (and bigger) than the puffy thing.

The K&N panel won't really increase intake noise at all.

Default Gjaime on the A4 forum has run some logs with his Vag-Com and has seen an improvement in air flow

volume and lower intake temps vs similar A4s with stock airbox. He uses a standard aftermarket intake kit with custom heat shielding. There are some people that suggest that the inverted top cones may cause excess turbulance and effect MAF reading if placed directly in front of the MAF.
