AUDI 80 S '89 Stalling and skipping when cold
 

Please help me.
My Audi 80 Sport (Auto)'89 has a problem when cold. The engine can just die and cut out (before re-starting itself and idling fine) or skip up to much higher revs before returning to normal. It can do this while in drive and stationary, driving along or whatever.

It only does this when the engine is cold, and interestingly only does it when the weather gets colder. (I am writing this as it happened for the first time again this morning since earlier this year).

Please help me - I have to sit there for 10 mins with no load on the engine so it can warm up fully if I want to drive away without any problems. Lots of other threads seems to have issues when the engine is warm - I have the opposite problem. Can runs a dream when warm.

Well, I had a similiar problem with my 80 and it turned out to be a headgasket leak believe it or not. Check your coolant and oil for any signs of mixing (mine was only mixed in the coolant)or unusual coolant loss. It can also mean a vacuum leak somewhere else besides the headgasket too, you should be so lucky if it is. Also, check the connection at the differential fuel pressure regulator up near the air filter, and the computer temp sensor and its connection as they can cause similiar problems on the 80. The quick test is to let the car warm up and then pull the connections on each of them one by one, the engine should react very badly when you do if they are working. If not, they are not probably not functioning right.
