I've somehow been roped into getting a friends 1986 2.2 (KV) Audi 90 quauttro running. It has been stored for over 10 years. Oh joy.

Replaced the timing belt, oil and all the filters before trying to start it. Found that the fuel pump was dead, so replaced that. The tank is full of rust so I'm running out of a petrol can in the boot at the moment to insure clean fuel.

Now she will start, but only for 2-3 seconds and cuts out again. Unless you floor the throttle and keep her above 4000rpm then she will stay running. Soon as you let the revs drop below 4000, off she goes. It seems like something is cutting the engine. It's a very clean cut. No coughs or splutters. As if the spark has been cut?

Been through the standard stuff plugs ect. Chased around all the vacuum pipes for leaks with easystart. I do have one mystery floating vacuum pipe. https://www.ilcats.ru/audi/?function...10&language=en It's no.10 that should go to no. 14, but i can't find where 14 is. I assume, as no.45 is a grommet, that it goes through the bulk head, but i can't find it. I've just bypassed that by removing the T and putting no. 10 straight on to the thermo-pneumatic valve.

Started my working life as a mechanic but stopped about the time this car was made. And before sensor madness had fully taken over. So can work a spanner, but a little clueless with the electronics. Can blink codes be extracted from an 86 car?

That car has C.I.S. (K Jet) injection. Any air leaks are a real problem. There are some plastic connectors, vacuum lines and other areas that need to be inspected carefully. Your problem sounds like an air leak to me. I am sure you replaced the fuel filter with a rusty fuel tank? I don't recall if the filter is up at the engine or back at the rear axle.

Thanks for your reply. Thankfully someone came and bought it as it was.

Did get some slight improvements by replacing vacuum pipes.

Maybe the new owner will show up here looking for help
