Umm...not to sound "ignant" here, but I always thought higher pressure was better than lower???

Default thick oil can cause problems

Thick oil will not flow correctly through the system and some areas could be starved of fresh oil. If this happens to the crank shaft you will spin bearings. Thicker oil just wastes power and doesn't provide better protection. 10-30 in all my street cars summer and winter 10-40 in the streed rod only because it does run a lot of clearance on the engine.

Default Re: Audi 90S 1993 - Oil warning light

Thanks to everyone who responded. Since there seems some difference of opinion about the oil I use I can say that all my previous Audi's (2 5000 S) have run on synthetic 15 - 50, and reached over 220,000 miles with the engines runnung strong, the only reason I sold them is that to much other problems (Steering, A/C etc) showed up.
This car has 190,000 miles has had an oil change every 3,000 miles. All pressure relief valves are OK and oil pressure is excellent when measured with pressure reader from the mechanic. The warning stays on after 2000 RPM and does not go off. I drive always with premium gas and the oil stays clean for at least 1,500 miles and shows only then a slight discoloration. Synthetic oils are in my opinion more fluid than regular oils, and give an older engine more protection. All the people we have contacted seem to have no answer for the problem. The other problem with the ECS light between 52-62 is a simular mistery that nobody seems to be able to resolve, Audi called me one day after I had revealed the problem and said to drive on since nothing seemed to change or defective and it was probably a too complicated electronic problem.
If you have any suggestions I appreciate any comment.
Regards

Default My car has the check engine light come on ...........

after I have driven it for 10 minutes if I am going at least 40. The code reads it's the egr valve but it has a new one. I'm told I need to clean out the egr port (hole) in the intake manifold but I'm just going to ignore it for a while.
I don't believe the oil weight would affect the oil pressure warning light, expecially if you have good oil pressure.

no, higher pressure just means more work / power wasted

Default can't take pressure????

the only weak spot in the oil system is the filter, as long as it's not fram/pennzoil its fine.

Default audi recommends 5w-40

and thats because of autobahn travel, 100mph+ over 20 minutes constantly.

10w-30 is fine...
