Can I swap my rear differential with a 4000q rear differential?....
My rear diff clunks pretty bad shifting from 1st to 2nd. It also causes the car to shimmy a bit and vibrate when I go around a turn slowly or pull into a parking space. I know the shimmy sounds like the diff lock, but I assure you this is not engaged. I have checked, the wheels spin seperately when I jack them off the ground, and spin together when I push the diff button on the console. The 4kq and my 80q have the sme final drive ratio, and the cases appear to be the same dimension from the outside, but has anyone done this? I would like to confirm that the CV axle diameters are the same and will bolt up in place of eachother, etc. Also, will the diff lock hook up the same way? Please let me know as I can grab a 4kq rear diff cheap from a local wrecking yard, and need to replace mine. Otherwise, I'll probably get one from Force5. My Jaguar did the exact same shimmy around slow turns before I broke the pinion gear. Any help would be great. Thanks!

85.5 to 87 use the same part number as the (017...040H) CQ and some of the 80/90qs. If your code is AEC, then you are fine. I don't know what the difference is between the ARS (the other rear diff for the 80/90q) and AEC.
Actually, just looked it up, its a date-cutoff thing. Use the 4kq rear diff, you should be fine...
