Coolant temperature sensor 97 audi cabriolet location and replace
I tried to replace the coolant temperature sensor on my 1997 Audi cab... Keyword search in subject does not provide any useful guide with pictures & info - so here I am linking the short note on my 97 audi Cab coolant temperature sensor location & replacement (P0116 fix):

The engine coolant sensor that throws your code is G62. It is behind the drivers side head in the coolant pipe.
If your engine temps are running in a more or less normal range on the gauge in the dashboard..check the sensor and the connecting plug..be sure they are clean and secure.
Part number for the sensor is 026906161. FCP Euro has them..depending on the vendor from $5 to $62. I would use the Bosch sensor at $30.
If the thermostat is lazy or broken your dash temp gauge will be very cold.and the engine never comes up to operating temperatures..the ECU will throw that code too.

If you did not realize - I did post an answer to a question I wish it would have been answered here before...
Your comment shows a schematic which is certainly sth. the enthuisast may find useful. Unfortunately this does not reflect what you see when you open the hood and just want to find the little thingy and replaced, and why I prefer to find a document to get to the piece on the web to refer to. However, good to learn that at least you agree with bosch sensor - where I shared the specific SKU for in my original post.
BTW-my Temp gauge did not work for years. My gauge was either leftmost, and water vapor visual when I was not quick enough otherwise. It was never yet culprit for CEL though, and only smog forced me this time to change all 4 lambdas, and T-sensor this time....
