Front Struts

Front Struts
1995 90 model
I've just replaced the front strut inserts and top bushings. When installed the strut top cap (inside the engine compartement) has about a 1/4" gap between it and the shock tower. In other words the strut is able to move about 1/4" inch up and down, which on my dirt road causes crashes and bangs. Before I replaced the parts the gap existed then, that is why I replaced the bushing (the new parts did show that the old parts had collapsed). The top cap is hard tightened down on the strut, its like there is something missing between the top of the strut the inner strut tower or the top cup where the nut goes on.
Any ideas??
Thanks in advance
Michael

actually the more accurate answer is; "that's 100% normal" for ALL new strut mounts....

regardless of manufacturer. When you start to see a 1/2"-3/4" gap is when you need to start shopping strut mounts again. The cupped washer on top of the strut tower is supposed to have a hard plastic ring around it but are missing as ofetn as not. However they don't provide much in the way of noise abatement or sound deadening even when in place due to their hardness.
You can purchase the alloy VW cupped washers pictured on my car above that have a "real" rubber sound-insulating damping ring part number: 1J0 412 319C. But expect them to sit 10mm higher than the OEM cupped washer. No other issues and don't affect ride height whatsoever and no issues with their installed height under the hood.

Mance, I'm curious what you think of the aluminum top mounts they sell in europe

According to the UK S2 forum they had massive failure rates as did I...
tho at least one forum member here had, and may still be having great success with his (again as did some using my solid mounts that are still in service today and have never incurred a bearing failure). I no longer run mine and haven't for years tho if I had a dedicated track car I'd run nothing but solid mounts. I've never encountered a solid mount body failure with one of my solid mounts but it seems no one can make a spherical bearing up to the task of handling city street bumps & potholes long-term when mounted in a solid body in such a front-end heavy car. Although it would seem when mounted in the rear they tend to last forever (knock wood).

I have been running those mounts pictured above for 3 years
mounted in front on 300lb springs without a problem. First on my '89 90q and now on my '90 coupe. Roughly 20000 miles or so of daily driving in all weather conditions. I would like to replace them to uses something quieter but other than that I have been happy with them.
