Im confused. I thought torsen was exclusive to Audi?
So what makes Audi quattro superior compared to other cars that use the same torsen technology?
^^ question may be badly composed or lacking but I hope you know what Im trying to get at

torsen diff

Re: Im confused. I thought torsen was exclusive to Audi?
Audi was a pioneer of its use and benefits, many still use viscous couplings and electronic clutch packs. Clutches will wear out, it is just a matter of time (EVO's I believe use them). Subie and Porsche use(d) VC's.
TorSen's are also found in many FSAE race cars, and the WIKI article did not mention that Audi also uses them in the rear of certain differentials. My '90 V8q has a TorSen center and rear diff. I think the Sport Quattro was the first Audi to get a TorSen, first full production Audi to get one was the 80/90 series.

quattro is surperior simply because it was one of the first ones that actually worked and..
worked very well, audi has been doing it for very long and is good at it. the hollow shaft inside the transmission that housed the centre diff, sending power frontwards and backwards all within a transmission that at first glance appeared to be no different than their fwd longie tranny or a regular rwd tranny. that shaft is what set them apart, making an awd system that was compact and light enough for smaller sedans like the 80... i would believe that if you had an 4ksq in '84, you would have something more much more special than if you go out and buy a 2008 a4q tomorrow, sophisticated awd's are more commonplace now and thus makes them not as special

From the Wiki: "Audi actually eliminated this by adding a second torsen differential to the rear axle in the Audi V8."

Audi has the only longitudinal torsen cause they use the hollow shaft.
For their center diff. one input and two outputs are all parallel to each other. Torsen center with the hollow shaft is absolutly badass engineering and is why they have been reluctant to abandon it after so many years (going on 17 years and still going).
