1991 Audi 80 1.6TD
When I turn on the ignition the battery light doesn't come on and there's a continuous beep from the instrument cluster. The oil light, glow plug light and handbrake light all come on as usual. When I turn the key further to start the engine, it starts easily and sounds as though the starter motor is turning at normal speed. Once the engine has started the battery light comes on, but a few blips of the accelerator is enough for it to turn off. Battery light doesn't come on at all when driving.

This doesn't happen every time, but probably more than 50% of the time. My assumption is that there is something wrong with the alternator or the charging circuit, but I feel that it can't be too much of a problem as the battery seems adequately charged.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Where are you located? In the USA most auto parts stores will check your starter and alternator for free with a tester.
