Speedometer repair options?

The speedo on my '95 Quattro occasionally fails to operate, especially when the weather is cold or the car has been parked for a while. A slap on the dash is usually enough to bring it back but it's obviously in need of some repair. I've replaced the speed sensor so the problem is most likely in the speedo itself or the dash wiring.

Any advice on getting it repaired? Is VDO my only option? Is there anything I can attempt myself? Would it be simpler/cheaper (ha!) to replace it? One concern with a replacement is getting the ODO to match although with this problem having been around before I bought the car it's hard to say how far off it is.

Thanks!

Check the archives...

Common problem. Solder joint breaks loose in the instrument cluster.

Pull out the cluster, follow all the solder joints to and from the speedo.

Repair as necessary

So it's not the speedo itself then?

Hmm, interesting. I somehow missed that detail when searching the archives, most of the posts I looked at releated to problems internal to the speedo itself, not the cluster or wiring. Guess I'll have to do a more specific search.

Thanks!

just take out the cluster, dissemble it and check the connections

hey - do you have any more of those ODO gears?

or a full cluster? darn teeth ripped off it again. don't know what's causing it to do that - i'm thinking of casting one out of aluminum or something.

Heat and age cause the gears to go bad! ;O) Only have complete ODO's no parts.

Re: I just fixed my sis' quattro last week...a loose solder is to blame.

Here's one pic...I have a bunch more, too. Email me if you'd like me to send em to ya. Apparently the loose solder point ranges from dash to dash so I can't guarantee yours is identical; but it is the same idea.

ps - in the pic my index finger is pointing to the problem.
