Strange ABS problem

Ok here's the deal I have an 88 90Q with an ABS problem, it occurs at only about 3 MPH when slowing down but at no other time. The ABS kicks in and it's almost impossible to stop the car after you slow down to 3 MPH, I have cleaned all the ABS speed sensors and set them to proper distance but I'm wondering if this could be a relay problem? Normally I just shut off the ABS when I get into the car, but I'd relay like it fixed because I do a lot of high speed driving on the highway and not having ABS is a hazard.

More than likely one of the sensors is bad? Hows their wiring? Got a voltmeter?

Use a voltmeter to check continuity. ;O)

Re: I think ABS does more harm than good.

But, that's just a personal opinion. Nothing worse than ABS clicking at you every time you stop on a snowy day.

abs sucks

i have the same problem with my 88 also, abs works until your about to stop then you hear this electronic grinding sound and the car jerks to a stop barely. I love the abs override...you get solid pedal feel without abs....you just push the brake in and you stop and its as simple as that. I always turned mine off and i like it better. I am dissapointed they didnt include that feature on the 2nd gen 90's. I also was not about to spend 500 bucks to replace all 4 sensors either, another drawback to abs....worthless expense.

Some early '93s have the ABS disable button...

All of B3 models have them!

Re: Some early '93s have the ABS disable button...

sweet, if i would of known that i would of looked for a early 93 instead of getting a 94.....crap...lol
i like my car alot, its loaded with everything audi had...everything but the abs override that is..

SCarGo02 07-30-2003 07:33 PM

That was in his post, he said he missed it in his B4...

SCarGo02 07-30-2003 07:35 PM

Well...mine doesn't...but mine was built 3/93...i'm assuming those built in 1992 had them...

...although '93s aren't as revised as '94 engines are - tend to leak a bit more.

IMO it looks naked having the two blank buttons between the hazard/heated seat switch! :ož

I'd take a '94 over a '93, but a '95 sport over all! ;ož

20V.org says that what You experience is caused by

sensor being too far from axle.I had same stuff, pulled out sensor and found that it was dirty again(I pulled it out like a week before).I cleaned it again and it helped.Maybe there was some dirt on the walls of the sensor hole and You pushed it forward when installing it
