Default Temp Gauge intermittent

Hi Everyone
My first post on the forum,
My Coolant Temp Gauge is intermittent. Sometimes it will work fine and other times it will not work at all and stays at the bottom of the dial.
What is it likely to be and is it possible to test with a multimeter to confirm diagnosis so I don't waste money?
Thanks

what car, what engine?
if its a I5 engine then it can be the temp sender (not the one on the cylinder head) or the gauge itself.
Speedometer (cluster) cold solder points tend to be a bad boy

That's an ADR engine. You have a dual temperature sensor located in a water flange coming off the cylinder head. It could be ither a 4 pin blue or green sensor. As Varia said, it could be either this or a bad solder in gauge cluster.

We had the same problem with our '97 cab when we bought it in '09. The dealer replaced the thermostat and temp sensor. The Audi tech stated that the gauge tested WNL. No fix. I bought a new gauge and put it in. Fixed. Stayed fixed.

you have a 3 prong resistor on the back of the cluster, replace it. also resolder all the joints on the cluster
