timing belt question

I have a 1997 Audi Cabriolet. Could I damage my engine by not replacing the timing belt and water pump correctly? Will I need any special tools?

I got my parts from blauparts

You can definitely screw things up by not having the right tools. You can rent everything from blauparts if you want or buy at least the tdc pin and the cam locking bar.

Do yourself a big favor and read the writeup on 12v.org. http://12v.org/maintenance/repairs/tbelt.php

The parts kit from Blau comes with a writeup too.

I've just changed my timing belt and water pump but my mechanics did the job w/o the special holding tool 3242 (pin) or 3243(bar). they found an alternative solution and gave it a try. It's definitely not impossible to do without. .They really know what they're doing and I trust them fully. Get the special part if you're not sure because it can be a disaster.
