torque converter/drive plate WTF?

so in my past experience with slush boxes I seem recall that the torque converter just slides off some sort of snub shaft and is not bolted to the starter ring. There are no bolts apparent and I pry and pry but nothing happens except the start plate flexes around. wtf?

Jesus christ.
Lift up the back of the motor. From underneith, you'll have access to the front side of the flywheel. Around the outer edge will be "x" amount of bolts that will need to come off. Usually 4, 6, or 8. After that, the TC comes off. The TC slides on to the trans input shaft. It is never splined onto the flywheel/flexplate, always bolted.

Look harder.
You'll have to get it up in the air - on a stand, or picker. From undernieth the bolts go through the flywheel into the TC.
...Oh, and rightie tighty, lefty loosie, in case you ask :-P

See my post below...possibly 3 bolts (and a circlip?).
Check the parts fiche. 1998 A8q, 4.2L V8, 5spd Tiptronic. 3 bolts, M10x17, 1.0 pitch. Circlip (may be on the transmission input shaft?) is 54mm in diam. Goes somewhere in the TC, radial shaft seal, washer, input shaft, and case area.
