a-arm bushings. This happening on B3/B4 quattro subframes. If you got 100k on your ride and have not done the rear subframe bushings and after mentioned bushings and mounts, this is what you have to look forward too.

Default Cracked subframe? CRAP!

Can that be welded? Or will that just crack again?

Default That's a stress fracture pal, you can't weld up something like that.....

it will happen again. You will need a new subframe.

Default Aluminum sub mounts means cracked subframe....

Rubber absorbs not only stress vibes but also
cushions torque twisting. When the rubber gets old it doesn't do it's job anymore and subframe starts absorbibg the punishment. Aluminum just hastens the damage, no absorbtion of shock stress.

Default So your saying, all B3 & B4's will crack, unless you change your bushings?

I bet there's alot of B3 & B4's out there, over 100K, which havent cracked.

B4 rear subframe, is not identical to a B3 rear subframe. ;O)

Default hmmm, I could understand worn out bushings = play, therefore you gots problems

but I'm thinking, if you took the rubber component out of the sub mount equation, so that there's no play, and tighten it down with something solid, that the bushings and suspension would take more of the punishment...

...maybe?

Default You make a valid point, however...........

how do you know for certain, that is what caused the subframe to crack?

Has the car ever been in a wreck?

What type of suspesion is on the car? Lowered?

What type of roads, & driving is the car subject to?

Has the car ever been airborne?

Whats size wheels & tires? Alignment?

Manufacturer defect?

These are but a few things which need to be considered, when trying to figure out the exact cause of the failure. ;O)
