Default 2007 A3 2.0T; Timing "chain" vs. timing "belt?

Good morning all. Sorry for the incessant questions but am not sure if I'm being told a straight story by my dealer. It is a dealer I have been going to the past 3+ years with my 2007 A3 2.0T so I am inclined to trust and I like my service writer but not sure about this question. Turns out when my engine "just stopped" while i was driving it that the timing chain had broken which apparently resulted in the engine "starving" for oil (that is, the cam didn't turn so no oil available to the engine) and the pistons slammed the top of the cover since nothing to bring them down. We are surmising now but net-net, I've been told the engine has metal all throughout and will need to be rebuilt. Of course it is out of warranty on time not miles as there are under 40K miles on my car!

I do have APR after market SW as well as their fuel pump and exhaust and intake system but this dealer has historically been "mod friendly" and is not directly placing blame for this on my mods...but that may complicate any case I'd consider taking against Audi.

Does this story they are telling me make sense? I have been hearing my 2007 A3 had a timing "belt" and the "chain" was not introduced in the car until after 2009 M.Y. It may just be a misspeak by my service writer but if there really is NOT a "chain" in my year vehicle, we are needing a conversation. Does the rest of that story sound reasonable at all? Albeit rather "perfect storm"??

tia for any input!

It is a timing belt. What I notice in Audi dealers, especially in the northeast, due to the dearth of A3 cars, they frequently speak in terms of other Audi cars. such as quattro are mechanical, etc.

Given the belt has failed prematurely, maybe they will work something out with you since you are just out of warranty. They could not help you out if they want to given all your mods, although their case would be more justified if it was head gasket or something directly affected by mods.

The switch to the 2.0 TFSI engine with the timing chain occurred during the 2008 model year.

Thanks! Turns out what he was calling "timing belt" was actually the "cam chain" which, as I have learned, once it is broken, you are decidedly f-ed...am working with my service writer to get it covered by Audi. Since my dealership is cool and "mod friendly", Audi may never know about any...we can hope...
