Default 2009 A3 automatic hatchback makes bad clunking noise when engaging/disengaging drive

As the title says, when I shift from either park or nuetral into/out of drive there is a clunck, a 1-2 second delay, then another very large clunking noise (sometimes multiple) accompanied by a small jerk, and then everything works perfectly. It shifts just fine while driving, and is silent while going from park to reverse. But it also makes the same noise when coming to a complete stop, whether I'm in drive or neutral.

It sounds and feels like the engine/transmission trying to activate but having a hard time.

I have an appointment with an Audi mechanic next week, but wanted to see if anyone knew what the issue might be.

Any help would be appreciated!

Is it the DSG/S-Tronic? If so, could be the clutch. Have you checked for codes on the transmission yet?

If you have access to VCDS, then you could reset the transmission. See this website: VW 02E DSG Gearbox DQ250 , DQ500 , DQ501

Hard engaging of the 1st gear (slams into the first gear) from a stand still point or in Reverse. This can sometimes also be caused by a decallibration of the clutches so you might be able to "save the day" by performing a recalibration with a VCDS cable. Procedure can be found on Ross Tech website. *
If this does not help or only for SHORT term, your next move is to change the N215 / N216 solenoids.
If you take it to a dealer, there's a good chance he'll want you to replace the entire transmission ($6000+ new). Or, if you can DIY or find a willing mechanic, swap out the solenoids. They are cheap.
