Default 2009 TFSI engine oil change Help please

Hello all,

I am new to the forum but i have own my audi a3 for awhile now. like couple years (second owner). anyways, i always have my service done at audi dealership but recently i just lost my job and decided to save money by doing the oil change myself. and here is what i did

1. Bought Mobil 1 0w-40 fully synthetic oil

2. Drained the oil by removing the 19mm plug at the bottom (after engine warmed up for 10 mins)

3. Removed the top oil filter. 2009 has oil filter on top not on the bottom

4. After oil had drained completely, 19mm plug was installed and oil filter was installed

5. Oil added to the engine. Check the dip stick and the oil level was almost to the max level. (Called it good)

6. Let the engine ran for a while and checked for leak. no leak

Here is the weird part.

after about 50 miles or so the low engine oil light pop up.

1. Stopped the car and check the oil level. it was low.

2. check for leak. no leak

3. added oil to the max level. (always have extra oil in my car)

4. drive it for 30 miles nothing happened. everything is good.

5. Have been driving for maybe another 100 miles since the oil was added and everything was good still.

HOWEVER today when i came out and decided to check the engine oil level here is what scared me.

1. engine oil was higher then the max level. like atleast 1/2 quart which is what i added.

2. i drove it to my shop to get the oil out. when i got there i checked the dip stick and the oil level was within the low and high mark.

WHAT should i do now? remove the extra oil or not remove the oil?

i did not use any special tool like VAG or anything to to the oil change.

my car.

2009
gas always 91 premium
all service up today.
just got 75k miles service performed at 72k miles now it is 75k miles

please excuse my english

You don't say how much oil you purchased or added to the car.

Oil level is checked by doing the following:

  • Car is parked on a level surface
  • Check engine oil level 3- 5 minutes after a hot shutdown

i purchased a 5 quarts bottle. I didnt measure how much i put it.

here is how i did

While engine was warm. i drained oil completely.

like at least 45 minutes later, new oil was added. I checked oil level while adding oil. i added to the max level

after the low engine oil warning came up i added about 1/2 quart of oil to get it to max level. the engine was hot when i added oil

You need to check the oil level:

  • Car is parked on a level surface
  • Check engine oil level 3- 5 minutes after a hot shutdown
If you didn't put in all 5 quarts, you're likely in good shape. I can't make it any simpler.

Thank you. so can you also explain where to oil went? i mean there was no leak but the oil level when cold was over the max and when warmed up it is right between the max and min. i always thought checking oil when the engine is cold is the way to check for proper oil. but according to you then it seems like we have to check engine oil after the engine had warmed up and cool down 3-4 mins. is that the audi things? cuz i have been doing oil change for my lexus and toyota and i never check the engine oil after the engine warm up. alwasy cold check

You say you don't know how much oil you added so how do you know oil is missing or low?

You need to check the oil level when the engine is hot - - refer to your Owner's Manual.

FWIW, all my Audis tell me if the oil is too high or too low. Your car likely does this too.
