Anyone installed an Alpine CDE-9857R headunit into an '06 A3?
Has anyone installed an any of the iPod compatible Alpine head units to the current A3?
I have 2 questions ..
1) Where did you get the blanking plate from (is it an off the shelf solution?
2) With the new head unit will radio/CD/AUX info still show on the centre display (along with the temp, trip details etc)?

Question #2, no integration yet with vag-com. they are working on an interface, but it will cost you. PAC is the source for this. I'm on it once it's out for sure I have Alpine in my A3 and love it.
No ipod though. 1st off, I have sirius. But secondly and more importantly, I don't understand why people don't make more of a fuss about WMA than IPODS. If someone is keeping the factory stereo and incorporating an IPOD that is one thing. But if you're replacing your head unit with an aftermarket unit look for WMA + IPOD ability.
If I listened to my IPOD when I worked out, and while on the train, AND in my car, I'd be sick of the content after 1 week. Of course I can update it, but what about sound quality. When I make WMA disks (data disks), I can burn 5-6 full length cds onto one cd at 320bitrate.
I have a tiny cd book (with 10 spots in it). I keep it under the climate control area. There are basically 1000-1200 songs in that book at 320bitrate, which is SUPERIOR sound quality when compared with ipod + typical itunes (among other sourced) MP3s (which are usually 128bitrate + sound terrible).

Thanks Ryan
Yeah .. I got mixed up in all the iPod hype .. but it suits me .. I get all the boxes ticked with the option of WMA filled CDs as well as the iPod.
I'll give Martyn a shout.
I'm based in Ireland so it'll be easy enough to get the bits sent over.

dude, don't mention it. I'll add that the ipod stuff is cool for sure and
very important. b/c TONS of people have Ipods and want connectivity with their head units. I was just hoping to inform a few about WMA.
good luck. so you're over seas eh? any scenic photos of your car?

No shots yet.
Hey Ryan,
I only just picked the car up a couple of weeks ago ... it's quite a change from the 1.6 '02 A3 I had. We don't get the same options here as you get in the US.
For example .. could you believe that a 2.0TDI A3 sport would go for ^40k .. that's roughly $35k.
For the same money in the UK, you'd get the S3 ..
When I get to some stunning scenery in Ireland or Scotland .. I'll send a few to you.

Um, you can encode mp3s at 320kbps
...personally I have 0 use for WMAs, especially since I currently live a Microsoft-free digital lifestyle
Why not demand Ogg Vorbis support, or AAC, or FLAC for that matter?
