H&R Rear Sway Bar

H&R Rear Rear Sway Bar will be my first mod on 2.0T A3 Premium. I ll get it installed next week.

How much handling improvement would i expect from this?

Re: H&R Rear Sway Bar

Most FWD are pretty nose heavy, and thus tend to understeer badly when pushed. A stiffer rear bar can help move the handling to a more neutral tendancy. Just be careful when you first get it on if it is a significant change from stock, you may not be used to the new handling characteristics. Also, if the sway mounts aren't very rubust, you have a chance of pulling them out of the car, though unless you auto-x or track it, it is probably unlikely.

As far as how much improvement, that is virtually impossible to say. For example in the Miata world, I know people who run the gamut from stiff bars front and rear to no bars on the rear; each *can* be fast, it depends on your driving style. Sways often make the car *feel* more planted, but don't always reflect faster lap times.

danny2.0t, did you just replace the springs while keeping the stock shocks?

how is the ride with the new springs?

ShadY12v 05-05-2006 09:12 AM

I just installed one on my Base suspensioned car, and on an a3 with KW coilovers...

on my stock, base suspensioned car, the difference is very noticeable. My car no longer handles like a Golf Cart!! It seems alot flatter in corners, alot less body roll, and a bit closer to neutral (still understeers tho). My bar is set on soft, and will be moved to firm when I install my KW's. I would recommend this bar to anyone who plans to leave the stock springs and shocks in their car...makes it handle alot better than stock.

Now as for the KW'ed a3, there was a noticeable difference, but no where nearly as noticeable as on my stock car. The car does rotate better in the corners, which is a great thing!!!!!

Good luck! The H&R bar is well worth my $200!!

so, the sway bar should be set to soft on stock suspension?

i have base (non sport suspension). what if i set it to hard? wouldnt it result in even better handling?

danny2.0t 05-05-2006 10:33 AM

just springs for now. ride is much tighter, less body roll, better road feel overall. H&R...

rear sway will enhance all of that even more.
