Default steel bits in oil pan: anyone recognize them?

Hi all,
I recently pulled the oil pan, plus the pump/ balance shaft assembly off of my A3. Motor is the 2.0 TFSI. I had an intermittent oil pressure light. Turns out the balance shafts were seized, and the oil pump rotor badly scored. Needless to say, I'm replacing the whole assembly, but wanted to see if anyone could identify the source of these steel shards. My first guess was valve train? The car and engine are new to me though, and I'm not familiar enough to make a decent assessment.

Thanks in advance,
-Nick

been doing some reading- looks to me like it's a piece of the high pressure fuel pump cam follower- specifically the end that interacts with the cam. Thoughts anyone? The other thing is almost surely a piece of american currency.

Default Same issue here

Just found all of those in my A3 oil pan as well. How did your pump replacement go? When looking at my balance shafts one wiggles and the other doesn’t. Is that a sign that it is toast?

Hello this is the same procedure for an Audi A7 2011 with the 3.0 TFSI supercharged engine?
Some say that for that oil pump the engine has to be removed entirely from the car? Is thatt correct?
Has anyone changed an oil pump or has the procedure for the car I have if it is different than the one posted?

Thank you!

Did you ever find out if the engine has to be removed to replace the oil pump? I have a 2003 Audi A4 B6 3.0L V6 that has 148,000 miles that I just bought, not sure if dumping a bunch of money into this is worth it.
