Putting aside cost to buy and depreciation, which is the better car?

VW Golf 2.0T FSI or Audi A3 2.0T FSI

They can't be identical.

Well logic says that
 

the luxury appointments will be a little higher on the Audi...also, if the 2.0 Audi is anything like the 3.2 engine that will be in the Audi, its more powerful then the VW, IE, the A3 3.2 will be 10+ HP more then the R32.

the audi is faster, nicer and a better buy but the golf is cheaper. audi is always better than volkswagon, but volkswagon is always less expensive.

I mean generally Audi exists to do the things you addressed by VW is a very quality product...they are making big strides with the R32 the Touraeg and the Phaton is a fablious ride. VW is no slouch, but as I mentioned, for the higher sticker your looking at some more luxury, items like the Open Ski Systen, a DSG Tranny, a Nav interface, as well as added performance.

There both good cars, it depends on what kind of price market your in etc...

check out any UK publication - the GTI has been bringin in rave reviews while the A3 has been given mediocre reviews at best.
