Default A3 FWD engine vs. A3 Quattro vs. A5 engine

My wife and I have an A5 SB on order. My son is interested in an A3. What differentiates the FWD 185 HP engine from the 228 HP Quattro engine vs. the A5 248 HP engine, all 2.0 L. Just ECU tune or more?

They are variations of the same base architecture, but more than a tune. I think there might be videos out on some of them - I think one is an :Ultra"? - those run a slightly different combustion cycle - the "Budack" cycle invented by an Audi employee. They may also have different pistons (cast vs. forged) and cranks (cast vs. forged) or other differences

I thought the FWD used a 1.8l not a 2.0l engine.
The differences are definitely more than just a tune.
Exhausts are also different.

My FWD 2018 A3 was definitely a 2.0L. It had some sort of HVAC issue and my dealership bought it back and cut me a deal on an S3 instead, which has been solid for 3 months.

The FWD 2.0 turbo in the A3 is fantastic, actually. Surprisingly quick for an entry level sedan, but the S3 is way more fun. I suspect there are differences in the overall drive train but the engine itself I would guess is pretty much identical mechanically. I want to say the DCT in the a3 was a 6 speed while the S3, also 2018 but earlier build with the retractable screen, is a 7 speed. Could be wrong about the
A3 trans. but the A3s are definitely all 2.0L i4s now.
