Just throwing this out there but the oil pan in my S3 is composite; plastic. I assuming the RS3 is the same. Looking at the photo, it could be that something pushed back far enough to crack the oil pan. Sure even a minor crack would allow oil to leak. But it doesn't mean some leaking oil caused oil starvation to the engine. I think the intercooler disconnect probably caused the surging, as someone else noted. I have a full skid plate under my S3 to prevent damage from beneath the car but doubt it would helped in a situation like what you experienced. Best wishes again for getting things back in order. Don't sign anything for the other party's insurance company until you are fully satisfied that your car is in perfect order. No reason you should suffer due to someone else's mistake.
