Do I really need to "baby it" during the break in period?
I have about 400 miles on my new 2018 RS3, and having been doing the recommended break in, of "no flooring it", and 1/3 throttle at best, and never going over 4000 rpm's. I cannot wait to just get in and rip it. So far it doesn't feel that much different than my 2017 S3 that I traded in for the RS3. Of course I know it is, but want to experience it NOW. I probably won't keep the car more than 40,000 to 50,000 miles. So will it really harm it if I just start driving it like I want? translation, FLOOR IT!

Delaying pleasure is a sign of maturity. I have 1200KMS on the clock so far on my 2018 RS3. For the first 1000 KMS, I kept the RPM below 4000-4500 RPM. Now that I hit the 1000 KMS mark, I am increasing the throttle up to 5500 RPM. Once I reach 2000 KMS, that's when I will fully unleash the beast. Meanwhile, you can keep it in Dynamic mode to enjoy the exhaust even at relatively low RPMs although be careful, the throttle response becomes very sensitive so gradually apply gas as one single flooring of the gas pedal and you're way above the limit |
I know the two schools on breaking in, but i’d follow the manual. 800 miles goes fast, and you dont necessarily have to baby it. Keep away from the upper 1/3 of yor tach and you’ll be fine. And there’s still a lot of fun to be had on the bottom 2/3 without floggig it. The engine is the main concern, but taking it a bit easy for a while lets all the systems cycle, and also tests the hardware- it is not unheard of, that rarely a product makes it out of qa with loose or missing nuts, bolts, hoses. Enjoy it though. |
My dealer told me to drive the **** out of it. I did launch control leaving the dealership. He specifically said to "not use cruise control and to not keep RPMs constant". His only concern was with the brakes and he told me to ease into them for the first couple hundred miles. My car straight up has an A3 manual, if the dealer says to hoon the crap out of the car, of course I am!

You'll never find consensus on this - so why not just follow the directions.
Personally, I see the metal filings in the oil on the first oil change - enough scientific proof for me to take 'er easy. |

Yes sir, you can set everything to Comfort or Auto then set the engine sound to dynamic
