Hopefully the attached link will take you to a photo of my added fuse. It is directly under the green 30a fuse. I think it is slot F48 (which is empty and switched).

I used the Mirror Tap. Best way to do this on an A3 especially the Cab. The fuse box is under the steering column on an A3 and the Cab has a strut running right across the fuse box it to make things even more fun. That combined with an airbag in the A pillar to make your V1 into a projectile the Mirrortap convenience does make sense.

Ok, so I purchased a from amazon.
I have an old Escort 8500 X50 , I don't think isn't much different to mount than the newer models.
First you need to pry off the top cover above the mirror. I used a trim tool. It has press in connectors at the top and slide out tabs at the bottom. Once you pry off the top, pull out towards you.
Then you need to remove the lower cover closest to the mirror. Each side near the top has a tab that latches into the other piece. press the sides in to release the tabs and pull down and towards you.
Once removed you can see the main power connector. Plug your taps into the top right lead which is red with a blue trace and the ground is the brown just to the right. This will give you a power source that powers on with the ignition.
I mounted the the detector slightly offset towards the passenger side. It sticks out a little more than my old suction cup mount but it's much more secure. Even my Escort "Stickcup" mount would fall off on a really hot day and almost always pull out my hardwire with it...
