S3 with 3 dirty tips?
I've read about having only 2 dirty exhaust tips (inner tips) on their S3 because the flap only open on certain modes/conditions. My new S3 is strangely having 3 dirty exhaust tips. The driver side outer tip is completely clean - I know the flap works on that tip because I feel exhaust coming out of it at startup. I haven't disable the flaps yet, so it's still operating as intended (I think). Anyone else seen this on their S3?

Um, pretty sure every S3 owner has. The car apparently runs rich on the stock tune and the closing of the outer flaps doesn’t help either. I’ve learned you either have to regularly clean the tips or just live with them.

I know the dirty inner tips are common. My question is why is my driver's side outer tip is spotless while my passenger side outer tip is almost as sooty as the inner tips?

The valves are independent from each other. You can get a mechanics mirror and put in the tail pipe to make sure they are functioning the same. When's coded to keep them open that's how I verified.

Thanks - did not know the valves operate independent from another. Always thought they're either both open or both closed. From the look of the soot, it appeared the driver's outer tip is closed most of the time. I just took a peek with the mirror per your suggestion and the valve on the driver's outer tip is indeed open when the car is off - so at least it's not broken shut closed as I had first thought

Got really frustrated with the dirty tips on my 2015 S3 as well. Found a great solution on another Audi forum. Replaced the chrome oval tips with stainless, dual walled round tips. Did require someone to weld them on for me however. See this link for my solution: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/aud...15-s3-2930626/ I am much happier now. Think they look nicer and are way easier to clean. Believe the stock chrome is sort of cheap and the exhaust residue pits the chrome easily and quickly. There are some other push on options as well. I say push on as the chrome tips are actually just covering the oval pipe beneath the chrome. I modded my car so all the exhaust flaps are open at all times too. And deactivated the soundacktor (sp) under the hood. Oh, and the APR cast downpipe installed as part of my Stage 2+ work gives the car a very nice sound without being obnoxious. Good luck with finding your solution.
