My guess is yes as even my wife's 2006 A6 required that

According to the BMW and Audi Service reps. the answer is yes. I would like to hear an answer from those who know that are not associated with Audi/BMW. If true it more than doubles the cost of a DIY battery exchange. The BMW dealer told my wife it was not coded by BMW the battery could explode. Killed my chances of saving over $200.

It is absolutely necessary

If you are not tech averse you can order one of the tools that allows you to code the new battery yourself. For the price of a dealer visit you can have a tool that you can re-use in other cars.

Seriously, I can't just replace a battery, I need to pay to have it registered? Why?

Car needs to know it's a new battery so that it will change the way it charges it. Car battery tech has not caught up with laptop/phone batteries where they report their level of charge to the host environment.

Can the OBDEleven tool properly register a new 12v car battery in Audi's?
If so, is there a source somewhere explaining the procedure?

IMO, it's a money grab just like GE requiring me to buy a $50 water filter with their RFID chip in it for my refrigerator vs. a $15 GE one without it.

Why do you have to change a battery for a 4 years old car? Is this normal for Audi?

rccoleman 01-03-2019 07:22 AM

The battery in my old Lexus only had a guaranteed 3-year life, and Audi may be similar. I don't see anything in the manual and don't want to dig around in the trunk, but the battery is often one of the areas that car manufacturers skimp on. Like a lot of things now, they want to cover leases and then you're on your own.
