Having had a few Dual clutches over the years, ranging from VW, Audi and BMW I can say with certainty that the latest S-Tronic in the S4 among others is the smoothest of the breed and I personally prefer it to any current auto on the market at the moment. I rate it's smoothness in the situations you described to be as good as the ZF and better everywhere else.

would love to see the S5 Coupe with the DSG, but don't think I can wait till the 2013 model as most people have speculated.

I drive a Q5 3.2 (six-speed tiptronic), my wife has a Q5 2.0T (eight-speed tiptronic), and I have extensive seat-time in S tronic cars. The eight-speed is by far the best all-around transmission, smooth at low speeds and slower take-off (S tronic is not), nice close ratios to keep the car on boil, and can pull off very fast 3-4 gear downshifts (unlike S tronic).

IMO: 8-spd > 7-spd > 6-spd

PS - and yes, my family loves the Q5.

How do you like your 6speed tiptronic?

+1

I don't get where anybody thinks the ZF 8-speed is anything but silky smooth - especially in the early gears. I wnet from the standard 6-speed manual in the '04 S4 cab to the ZF in the 2011 A5 cab, and I am THRILLED with the 2.0T/ZF combo...especially at the gas pump.

;-)

I actually really like the 6-spd. It has taken several years of tweaking the software (Audi's side), but it is a perfect match for the 3.2 with its wide gears and anticipatory software. The 8-spd, in time, will get even better, just like the "old" 6-spd.

And another fun tidbit: the US A6 with its 8-spd tiptronic, is faster to 60 than the EU-spec 7-spd S tronic A6. :-)

The really odd thing is that Audi switch most of the models that come with DSG in Europe with a traditional automatic for the States, doesn't make much sense to me.
I also noticed this and was wondering why they may have done this. Any hypothesis?
