Or will it keep the V8? Anyone know or care to speculate? I have a friend interested in the S5, but would rather not get a V8.

Don't think so. The A4 (and Q7, upcoming Q5) are considered "high volume"
lines, whereas Audi is keeping the A5/S5 limited compared to the A4 line. Hopefully they boost output of the 4.2 to 380+ bhp at some point but I don't think they will ever drop a forced induction V6 into it. We have to wait for the RS5 for more serious power.

My money would be on the S5 keeping it's V8 for the duration of its production run.
I liken it to the B7/S5 current situation. The S5 engine is a better engine and I'm sure would fit fine in a B7 S4, but they aren't putting it into that car. B7 S4 keeps its engine, until the platform is dropped and the new B8 comes out.
In the case of the S5, if there is a future engine change coming, it will be when the next-generation A5 chassis comes out.

It does seem much lighter on it's feet, either from less weight, engine mods or both
but I really want a supercharger. I wanted the performance of the RS4 and although the S5 has more torque and holds its own against the RS4 and M3 until 60 mph, it runs out of steam really fast compared to the other two. I guess one can never have too much power

Rs4 vs S5.
