Black paint + brush and "strap slapper" car washes + car wash guys with drying towels and no paint swirls? You are one lucky guy indeed.

I find that difficult to believe. A black car gets swirl marks even if you look at it the wrong way (let alone take it to an automated wash where it gets whipped by hundreds of straps S&M style).

my original post was really inquiring about the A5 canvas top. But I do appreciate everyone's feedback. I'd been taking my 86 MB as the hardtop to get washed, but its always a pain to put the hard top on because u need 2 people, but after yesterday success with the audi a5 softtop wash, I decided to throw my classic MB cab for a test.

I do Agree with someone below, the wash is never better than a handwash, but it does get the job done. My spoke wheels came out bright and shinny

And let's not forget about those filthy spinning brushes grinding the dirt into the paint with who knows what harsh chemicals followed up by towel boys with their sandpaper drying towels. Tasty.
My check engine light goes on if I get within 200 feet of a car wash.

In my driveway. Other than the investment for soap, sheepskin mitt, 2 buckets, waffle microfiber drying towels, wheel brush, Optimum Spray Wax and some other detail goodies, the cost is free.

In winter, I use Optimum No Rinse and Shine car wash formula in my garage where it's usually above freezing with only 2 gallons of water using the two bucket method - no hose needed and no damage to the finish. Pretty remarkable stuff - Google it for reviews.

What is "the two bucket method"? I think I'll try a local car wash for my '09 A4 Cabriolet Quattro. The last time I hand-washed the top it came out fine until I sprayed the convertible top protect ant on it. Followed the instructions to a T but it came out gray and blotchy. Won't be doing that again.

Two bucket method is one bucket with soap and water with the other bucket full of clean water to rinse your sponge.
