Max tire size for 18"?

Obviously an 18" tyre
As for width, that will depend on the width of the wheel, which you haven't stated.
Audi made both 7.5 and 8.5" width wheels for 18" fitments. If it is the latter, a 255/40 x 18 would work (OEM is 245). Assumes the wheels are OEM offset or thereabouts.

9.5" wide is the minimum recommended wheel width for a 285/35-18 tire. It probably would fit on an 8.5" wheel, but the installer might find it hard to get on and after he does git it on the sidewalls will bulge a fair amount.

I'd rather replace a curbed tire than a damaged rim.
Of course, damaging the tire by curbing it might get an instant flat....

agreed, Sloop.
however, curb rash on the wheels gets expensive, too.
yes, there is a handling/safety issue with putting too wide of a tire on the rim.
but have always put +10 mm tires on The Wife's Audi's to minimize wheel damage from her parking-by-feel process.
