You should consider that the S5 has the normally-aspirated V8 whereas the S4 has the V6 supercharged engine. The interior of the S5 looks better IMHO, but the S4 has the 3G MMI. Decisions, decisions....

S5 looks nicer IMO and has a larger driver/passenger interior room.
S4 has much better gas mileage due to the V6, has updated infotainment, and also has 4 doors.
So basically it's looks and flashy ride feel vs. a fast sedan..
I went with an S5 because it looks much nicer IMO and it isn't as common as all the A4's you see on the road. I always think an S4 is an A4 until I get up close.

its a sick looking s5...sex on wheels as a friend described...wife drives an SUV...we just had a baby in May...should i let the lack of 4 doors sway me from the s5? how much room is really back there? when i test drove one i was more focused on the grunt of the 4.2L and shifting...kinda forgot to care about the backseat. is it a big inconvenience for you guys with families?

The S5 is without a doubt a nicer looking car. I've owned 2 x A4, 2 x A6 and a 2014 S5 cabriolet Prestige. The S5 turns heads, loads of compliments after 9 months of ownership. However the high mileage is a negative factor. If you still want that car, have an authorized Audi tech inspect it fully. Personally, I recommend you lease a 2015 vehicle with Audicare and full factory warranty.
