Default RS5 Cold Start

Hello Guys,

I am new here and I just made the jump from a BMW 2010 135i to a 2014 RS5 (Black/NAV/Sport Exhaust/20" silver finish), I have only 200 miles on her but I am loving what I see so far !!!!

I know I am getting paranoid and I want to check if this is a normal when you start the car in the morning (I live in FL so the temperature is mid 60s to 70 in the morning)

When the car starts I heard a whining sounds and I notice the RPM runs at 1200 then after 30 seconds the whining sound stops and the RPM drops to below 1000 and the card sounds normal.

Is this normal?

here is the a video of a cold start:

The video is private. Can't watch it. The cold start rpm is normal and yes it drops after about 30 seconds. I let it idle until it drops, before I start moving. I'm not sure about a whining sound when cold start. I wouldn't describe any of the beautiful noises this cars makes on cold start as whining :-). I can probably tell you more after you make your video public.

This is normal. The engine is built to misfire at startup for 20 sec or so. This is what you are seeing as high rpm and hearing as whining sound. Def. don't drive it during that time just wait for it to click back to normal. If you're not in a rush just warm it up for a couple min anyways. Congrats too on the ride, it's the best car I have ever owned!

Also.. I would highly recommend breaking the engine in by the book. Don't push it past 6500 until 1500-1750 miles. What I did what to always keep the rpm moving during the first 1500, don't just cruise in one gear. Make sure you touch all rpms up to 6500, then after 1500-1750 miles or so you can really lay into it and test the higher rpms. I only say this because that is what I did and my engine is fully broken in perfectly, runs like a dream on the track. Verrrry fast and wow so much fun. I plan on adding AWE track exhaust in a couple months.

Thanks man.

this might be a dump question but why it is designed to miss fire? I never seen this in M3s and AMGs.

I am doing the same thing you said, I warm up the car for 2 minutes before I start driving. and I am going thru the break in period by the book. 200 miles down 1300 more to go

Honestly it's hard to tell from that video. I definitely don't get that whoop whoop sound, but maybe that's just sound distortion from the recording. First time I heard about the designed for misfiring. My understanding is that the reason for the initial higher rpm is to circulate the oil quickly and that's also why you don't want to start driving before it settles down.

That's just what the dealer told me so I could def. be wrong on that and your explanation makes more sense. Disregard my reply to that since I don't know for sure!
