Some guidance for selling my S5 Coupe :/
Hi all,
I very much apologize if this isn't the right place for this question, but I wanted to get some of your perspectives and experiences on the best way to sell an S5. This is my fist time selling a car that is high-end like this. What methods have you guys had success with - Craigslist, eBay, Carmax, something more specialized such as the classifieds here?
A couple details on it, I was wondering if you think these would make it easier or harder to sell - it's a 2011 V8, and the color is actually an Audi custom color from the R8 (daytona gray metallic).
Thanks so much

Try Carmax--it's quick and free. I've had them appraise several cars, and they offered acceptable prices to me.
I always end up trading my cars in, as I don't want to deal with advertising, bogus offers, tire kickers, payment issues, etc. My time is worth more than the crap I would have to put up with to make extra $$$. Plus, one also has to consider the tax bonus when trading a car.

I actually went to Carmax very recently, got a quote which was expectedly a tad bit low, but as you said still not all *that* bad (considering all the time I save). I guess I wonder if I try and sell it myself if an S5 - as gorgeous of a car as it may be - just isn't all that in demand on the market? Only one way to find out I suppose, but wanted to see if you fellow Audi owners had some insight on it.

If the car is really nice you could try to sell it on AW and online as an enthusiast is more likely to pay a premium for daytona grey. Also, you could sell your car to your local Audi dealer... they can usually pay pretty decent prices for cars, even if you don't buy another... maybe even more than Carmax.
Private party sales take a while. Ebay will get the least.

Thanks for the reply and the help Muhammad. I'll certainly give the dealer a try, good thinking. Interesting about getting the least on eBay. I would have thought eBay might be good because you can have a very large audience for your listing.

The trade-in value is typically subtracted from the taxable total on your purchase. Let's say your new car is $50,000, and your trade in is $30,000. You would actually pay sales tax on $20,000. Whereas, if you did a private sale, you would pay sales tax on the full amount of your new purchase of $50,000. So, if you can't sell your old car outright for at least the trade-in plus tax, you might as well just trade it in.

^^ That's not the case in all states. I don't know about Texas, but in California you pay sales taxes on the full amount no matter what, on the other hand when leasing we only pay sales tax on the monthly payment.

Here is what happened last week when I traded in my S4 and bought my RS5.
My Dad suggested I get a Carmax quote, as his friend had gotten $7000 more than the dealer wanted to offer on his A5. Long story short, I brought the Carmax quote paper in when I went to negotiate. I got $4700 more for my S4 because I had the paper, the dealer tried to lowball me, I showed him the paper and he quickly brought his offer up to match theirs.
