‘RS’ Grill version 2 for S5
#31
I’ve been digging around for options on the grille and installation. Here’s what I’ve found:
EMD Auto in SoCal offers this RS grille in one color combo only: black optics, mesh & silver Quattro lettering (www.emdauto.com). Their price is $479 w/ free shipping in the US. This is their version 2 and they have a disclaimer that if you have a camera you should buy version 1 which is $100 less, but always sold out...
Another source is an Instagram user named “b9bomber_s4”. He’s quoted me a price of $420 including shipping. I am fairly certain that he’s repping a company selling on eBay. Not 100% sure, though. His comment about the camera is the same as the eBay seller: can provide a mounting bracket.
I got an installation price from my local Audi dealer of just under $700 for the swap out and painting the cross bar as long as I provide the grille and black paint. I called the body shop Audi recommended to do work in my area, but they won’t quote me until they see the part & car.
All that being said, I am going to hold off. $1k+ is too rich for my blood.
Mine is the "original" version from ebay (seller: asianbodykits)

I just got an e-mail from EMD that the Version 1 is back in stock and they are showing a quantity of 8. I’m passing this time but will still be looking once my car is actually here.

Today my sales rep called me back to tell me the quote he supposedly received from the service manager for a custom grille installation.
$700 for 4 hours of work since it was "how long it took him last time". A complete affront to any sensible customer.

That is in line with a dealer's hourly labor rate. My dealer is $160/hr so I could see some dealers pushing $175/$200.

If I were looking to have this done I’d check with some local body shops. I have no idea what their labor rates are, but it might save some money — assuming the body shop did outstanding work.

Minus the time waiting for the crash bar paint to dry, I think it was less than 3 hours for me. I had to take it off a 2nd time to install the replacement sensors - 30 minutes? Granted, carefully unsnapping the existing grill off the bumper was the most time consuming 1st time around (and nerve racking part), but I was doing that with a screwdriver, and there might me an actual tool for that. Point being, a body shop doing it a 2nd time around should be under an hour for the removal / install portion - so your dealer apparently is incapable of learning from experience or (more likely), looking for some easy money.
