I'm not sure why anyone would want to mess around with those two bolts. From the service manual, it states that to never loosen those two bolts. There's a reason they are special bolts. You don't need to remove them to change your pads.

luder, could you point me in the direction of the service manual? Is this available for download? Thank you!

Thanks for the clarification and the quick response. I managed to find the instructions on how to remove the calipers.

If you still need info check your PM, I'm nearby and just did my pads / rotors on the S5 at home.

Hi all, typical I find this thread "after" I chewed up the 2x bolts that are never to be loosened... does anyone know the reason why they are never to be loosened (torque setting or other). I want to put it right. Thank you.

IIRC, they are thread locked, via Loctite or whatever equivalent threadlocker Akebono use. You can see the lock marking (green) on the OP's first picture. They are only to be removed when the caliper is being dismantled for repair or replacement, hence the warnings in the maintenance sections in the erWin pages that people have posted here. They look like a 7 point spline drive, which is what Audi have used in other models, although there will be a special tool version to fit correctly. Machz posted a link early in the thread for the AS-22, but I think that is for the B8.

I am sure there will be a relevant section (not maintenance, repair / rebuild) within B9 S4/5 erWin resources. So perhaps a 24 hour subscription to download whatever you need. Two new bolts, the correct socket tool, and some red Loctite should do the job and not be expensive. This happens quite often, I've read about it in BMW forums. It is natural to see a bolt, and want to undo it 😂
