Default 2019 Phone Cradle For Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Look here for new lower price version of the cradle

Over a year ago, ArvX147 shared with us his Android Auto car mount and I’ve been waiting for my 2019 to arrive to see what I could do now that we have the wireless charging pad built into the center armrest storage compartment. I decided to make a cradle that mounts to the swinging part of the armrest to elevate the phone above the wireless charging pad leaving the pad unobstructed with the idea that I would slide the phone in the cradle when I want to use Android Auto or place it on the charging pad below it when I simply want to keep the phone charged. Then I set Android Auto on the phone to automatically grab focus when connecting as discussed in another thread and it makes using Android Auto pretty simple.

I started with making this plan for my Google Pixel 3 (with a skinny case) then got a few parts then I got it printed and here's what I now have:

Then I screwed it to the armrest and it works like a charm.

For the phone to freely slide in and out of the cradle, the armrest has to be up on its first resting stop, not all the way down shown on this picture:

I might print a revision that angles the cradle slot a little bit so that the phone can slide in even when the armrest is at its lowest position.

Cost:
USB-C M-F adapter: $4
0.8 foot USB-C cable: $11
SLS nylon printed cradle: $36
Total: $51

Good stuff! I did something similar but with a proclip mount, and used velcro to attach it to the underside of the armrest. I positioned the mount at the base of the armrest though so the phone is invisible when inserted and the armrest is down. It does mean I have to open and close the armrest each time though, which I'm ok with.

Love the mounting position, would be nice to have an angle so the phone has no chance of sliding out on braking. Probably going to look into adopting this idea!

Thanks, now I have to go do some brake tests!

If you go with this, know that I had to cut down the two mounting screws nearest to the cradle's connector to eliminate interference with the armrest sliding mechanism. I purchased these 1/2" from McMASTER-CARR and they were fine for the other two locations but 3/8" or 1/4" might have worked for all fours: https://www.mcmaster.com/92295a313

Here's rev 2. Nothing is rarely perfect until rev 3 but I think this one is. I angled the mount so the phone can be inserted and removed while the armrest is at its lowest position which wasn't possible with rev 1.

And it looks like this:

Can you retrofit the 2018 with the wireless charging pad? Is the pad just for charging or will it also connect to Android Auto? Ideally I'd like to wireless charge my phone while also connected to Android Auto.

I don't see the need? For Android Auto currently, you have to be plugged-in. Which means you are charging.

Android Auto is not wireless on these cars. If it was, I wouldn't need this wired cradle. The charging pad is just that, for charging.
