2019 RS5 Sportback - Drive System Malfunction

I had my RS5 Sportback for one week with only 330 miles on it. And then I receive the error drive system malfunction. The car shutters at 0 mph speed, and was on limp mode back into the dealership while smelling of burning rubber along with very hard shifting. Torque meter would go up to 50% with little to no throttle response. One of the senior technicians is scheduled to look at it Monday, which also is the one who looks at R8's as the shop manager wouldn't let anyone else touch it because of the RS moniker and how new these cars are.It was quite alarming as the car gave me the error while I was on a highway and had to quickly exit as I could not keep up with highway speeds. When you spend this much on a car, I am not happy.
Better than it happens now, less than a week old, then later in its life.

I am sure that the dealer will be able to fix it. Enjoy the new ride.

Yikes, that sucks sorry to hear that. Please let us know what you find out and hopefully it is nothing major.

How many miles of 'limping' did the car have to do. If I smelled anything burning I think I would have parked and called a tow truck.

Best of luck. Let us know the outcome.

Ouch, sorry to hear that! I’m sure they’ll take care of you. BTW, when servicing an RS, what loaner did they give you?

Hopefully an R8.

I didn't have an appointment, and it was unplanned. They found a loaded A6 model year 2019. If the car is going to be in the shop for a bit, I'll ask for a bit faster car. But the A6 is very nice.

First time Audi owner here. How much did they charge you for the loaner?

loaners are free

Rius 02-10-2019 08:36 AM

Wow that really sucks. Hope they figure out what's wrong and it's an easy fix

The dealership said it was a faulty error code on cylinder 1 - misfire. I'm not sure how much I believe that as the car had around 400 miles on it. However, the dealership has been very professional, and they even dropped off the car at my house and picked up the loaner.

Happy to hear they were able to fix the issue! My dealer also offers a drop-off and pickup service for oil changes and other service issues. Not sure I'll be taking advantage of it though as I don't feel comfortable letting the service guys drive my car.

I have some shocking news for you. They will drive your car even if you drop it off. They have to.

Driving my car around the dealership vs driving my car for the 30 + miles from the dealership to my house is not the same thing. Thanks for the "shocking" news though.

Yeah I agree on the service guys. However, my Audi Sport sales person drove it to me. He said he wouldn't let anyone young drive it lol

Oh okay. I actually have a good friend that works in the service department at my dealer. I would let him drive it to me. If you have a good relationship with someone then that can give you some peace of mind vs letting a random person drive your almost $100k car.

Update. The car is back in the shop for the same issue. As of today it only happens in Dynamic mode with spirited driving.

Hope it all gets worked out.

Which dealer in the Chicago area are your bringing your RS 5 to? I can say from working for an Audi dealer in that area, not all the service centers are the same.

chicago_marketing 02-22-2019 02:41 PM

I take it to Audi Morton Grove - no complaints. I know one of their senior technicians by name now — colossal computer nerd. They replaced the coils for cylinders 1-3, and so far no more misfirings on dynamic. I just tested it today. Also got my black badges in all around. Took three weeks!

Faulty coil packs on an Audi? I think I know this tune.

Sick badges!!
did the dealer get you the badges? OEM or do they send out for paint?

JD15 02-22-2019 07:22 PM

It wouldn't be an Audi without bad coil packs. The one time my B8 had to be towed was when it popped a coil pack. Do other brands have this problem?

These are OEM badges from Audi. I saw you ordered TAG; those are the same quality if not better. The retail cost actually might be cheaper from TAG as my retail pricing on the logos/badges for front/rear/sides was $1400 - thank goodness I didn't pay anywhere close to that.

Porsche has the problem with Cayman/Boxsters.

chicago_marketing 06-26-2019 05:09 AM

Fast forward four months later. This is still a problem. On rapid acceleration check engine light goes off and loss of power. I have requested from AOA to repurchase the vehicle. I love the RS5 Sportback it has just about everything you could want except wireless carplay and about 60HP/60TRQ more power.
Has anyone gone through this replacement process with Audi and what was the end result?

That sucks. Sorry to hear. Are you going to replace with another one or looking at something different?

sjs55 06-26-2019 11:23 AM

Sucks you will have to lemon your RS5, but you are probably better off in the long run. I had my previous S4 replaced by AoA. Once I got high enough up the food chain they actually did a great job of making the replacement process as easy as possible, even asking if I would order the same spec, etc. They were able to locate an identical car already in transit and had it rerouted to my dealer, otherwise they would have built one to my spec. They also replaced the Xpel and swapped my all seasons to the new car once it arrived.

Sorry this has happened to you. This just happened to me last night (2019 Rs3) with 287miles... and the car was just ceramic coated and had a clear bra installed :(. It got on a truck this morning to the dealer. Hoping the fix/reasonable fixes will solve it permanently or I too will be looking for them to buy/replace the car.
