2019 vs 2018 3.0 TFSI engine block?

Hey all. Been a few months since I posted here. How goes it.

Am I crazy in thinking the engine block in the 2018 S5 is aluminum? It was when I was shopping around on Audi USA, I can find C+D and other articles where it’s listed as aluminum.

Looking at the 2019 S5 on Audi USA it shows cast iron...

You are not crazy. The block in the 2018 is cast aluminum closed deck design and should be the same for 2019. Could you link to where it says cast iron?

I see cast iron on the A5, but aluminum on the S5 according to this page:

It’s on the Audi USA site under engine specs for the S5 SB. Granted the mobile site is a bit wonkey, havented tried looking it up on the main site yet.

The B8 SC V6 had an all aluminum crankcase (block). The B9 turbo V6 has an aluminum crankcase (block) with cast iron sleeves (liners). The cast iron sleeve block is better at keeping long term oil consumption low, but more expensive.

B9 V6...

"A fundamental redesign of the V6 TFSI has lowered its weight by 14 kg (30.9 lb) to 172 kg (379.2 lb). The crankcase, which is produced from an aluminum alloy in a complex sand-casting process, integrates thin-walled gray cast iron cylinder liners. This reduces friction in interplay with newly developed rings for the aluminum pistons."

https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/...s-5-coupe-7652

"The 2.9 TFSI was derived from the 3.0 TFSI used in the Audi S5. Because of the
greater forces inside the engine, the valve lift has been shortened by 3 millimeters
(0.1 in) to 86 millimeters (3.4 in). With its unchanged bore of 84 millimeters (3.3 in),
the displacement is 2,894 cm3. The crankcase integrates thin-walled cylinder liners
made of gray cast iron and the crankshaft main bearing has a 2-millimeter (0.08 in)
larger diameter compared with the 3.0 TFSI.
The crankcase is created from an aluminum-silicon alloy by means of sand casting and
weighs just 34 kilograms (75.0 lb). The so-called “deep-skirt” design extends the
walls of the crankcase far downwards, which also saves weight. The entire engine
weighs just 182 kilograms (401.2 lb) which makes it 31 kilograms."

So this is strange, It is now listed as cast iron instead of aluminum for the S5 SB. Additionally the horsepower was reduced from 354hp in the 2018 to 349hp in the 2019. Curb weight goes up from 3850lbs in 2018 to 3935 lbs in 2019. 0-60mph has a minor change from 4.4 sec in 2018 to 4.5 sec in 2019. Torque is the same.

Whats really strange is that the block for the S4, S5 coupe, and cab all show aluminum still. HP still down 5hp though.

I dont know why I’m interested in all of this....just curious I guess.

The change in rated engine output is just a new rating system for 2019. There is no change to the engine. .

^^ Correct. It used to be metric HP, which was a bit misleading.
1 metric HP = 0.98632 mechanical horsepower
