I just got an email from Audi, saying Audi Connect is getting better and seemingly it is. Audi is moving some of the myAudi app features you formerly had to pay for (Prime) to the free tier (Care). This is a positive move - and one that makes it even more difficult to want to shell out $499/18mo for basically traffic reports and Google Earth overlays, although I do like that view. Here's the important details from the email...
With the myAudi app,1 you can lock and unlock your vehicle,2 view its status report,3 and even find it in a parking lot, thanks to helpful Audi connect®4 features. By March 8, 2019, Vehicle Status Report,3 Car Finder5 and Remote Lock/Unlock2 will be available as part of Audi connect CARE,6 which means you will continue to have access to these features, regardless of whether you continue subscribing to Audi connect PRIME7 after the expiration of your trial or subscription period.

I'm more worried about what happens after 4 years. I was told that (in Canada) the service currently comes with a 4 year subscription and the sales people said no one from Audi Canada was able to tell them how much it would cost to renew it.

I never bothered to sign up for Audi Connect once the trial ran out, way to expensive for the small amount of value that it provides. So I'm very happy to see that some of these features are now free like they should have been all along.
But I agree with arrtewwx that this is likely to cause more people to drop out of the paid tier of service since the value of that tier is dropping while the price is not. No way I'm paying $27/mo to get traffic reports and Spotify when I'm already using Android Auto to access these for free.
Now if I could just remember my password to the myAudi app.

I rarely have issues with the new app, and didn’t experience any problems with the previous version. Occasionally, I will get odd errors when refreshing the data. Something like “extended warranty” can’t be retrieved, etc. but I just ignore that. Sorry you’re having so much trouble hotice:/
