From the manual, it sounds like if you use the key fob to close the luggage compartment lid you can't be more then 9 feet away from the trunk and if you press the button on the lid you the key fob can't be more than 4ft away from the trunk (and not inside).

But if you stand 3-4 feet away on the side of the car close to the rear doors, it refuses to close. The manual doesn't say it but it looks like it wants you behind the car, then it works from 10-15 feet away. Must be a lawyer thing.
