Default FasTrak Hidden Mount

Until such time that our cars start communicating with toll roads on their own and before they replace our transponders with stickers, I drew up this FasTrak mount, got it 3D printed for $12 and used double-sided tape to mount it behind the MMI display. Nothing is visible from the driver seat and the transponder is easy-in when needed and easy-out when not. I haven't tested it on toll roads yet but I'm pretty sure this location will be fine.

The mount.

With transponder removed.

I'm going to have to look into that for the iPass too.

I hadn't noticed but since you made me look, yes it reflects in the area near the rear-view mirror where the transponder would normally be mounted had I used the velcro strips. You can also see the MMI display silver bezel reflection in that area. And considering all the other dashboard reflections visible in this picture, this one is really out of sight and not a concern.

Cool - I had a similar idea. I wrapped my hard plastic toll tag (about the size of a deck of cards, but half as thick), with black plastic electrical tape. It was a test run before I plastidip it, and just haven’t gotten around to it. It’s way better than having an ugly white tag stuck to the window.

With the New Jersey / Pennsylvania EZPass system if you make any marks on the white case, when you exchange one for another (when something goes wrong), you are charged a “penalty fee” for defacing the housing. Maybe TX isn’t that way but my in-laws were charged a $35 “defacement fee” because they had written their name on it in a black sharpie.

Don’t think so, plus I’d just tell them to shove it and keep the d*** thing anyway! They have phased out the plastic box and substituted it for a cheaper and more terrible looking sticker. I should get the new sticker, but haven’t thought about how to make it look less terrible. I guess I could plastidip it too and stick it on the dash, behind the mmi tablet screen (where my plastic transponder is now)

Newer sticker looks like...

New Jersey’s system is RFID, not optical. It’s been out for about 20 years and has been reliable. I hope they don’t go to an optical tag!
