Free map updates quota

Not long after I got my car in march 2019, I did updated the navigation maps and noticed that only the first five updates were free of charge (see first image below). So in order to keep my maps up to date longer, I decided to not update the maps every 6 months. In fact, I never updated it since then. So today I went to myAudi to download the latest maps but I have a message that I used up my quota of free map updates!!!

WTF?

“5 Free — Use’m or Lose’m”.

Welcome to Audi!

Yup - Audi's definition of free was you got free access to the next five map updates after the one that was first loaded at the factory. Doesn't matter whether you install or not, five is the count. The maps come out twice a year at Week 22 and Week 45. My A4 in service as Feb, 2017 and my last update is 2019/20. Would have expected your last one to then be 2021/22. Do you know actual build date for your car?

Seems like a poor way to manage the map system. It's a good thing Audi does make military/combat vehicles, the weapons systems personnel would never hit the target if they missed the map updates. C'mon Audi, the maps can be implemented when the user desires the update!

Car was a 2018 left over and build date was February 2018.

Is there a document that state you have 2.5 year of update? It should be from delivery date and not build date. I really hope warranty is from delivery date!!!!

That puts it at about a year after mine, so 2020/21 would be the last one you're eligible. You'll have to check with Audi Canada about what your official In-Service date is - that's what defines when your factory warranty begins. This info should be in your Maintenance Booklet as well.

Build date - My S5 has a May 2018 build date and my last update was the 2020 / 2021 update released at the end of 2020.

Another disappointment from Audi for me :-(

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...69738-0001.pdf

"For MIB1 & MIB2 vehicles, map updates are free for the first three years after the production date of the vehicle. The vehicle is automatically activated from the factory to allow the customer to update the MMI navigation with the next five releases within the next three years. This means the customer can attempt to update the MMI with the same release as many times as they want. Release schedules for map updates are approximately CW22 and CW45 of each year."

Once you identify which most recent version you car is eligible to receive, you can search for it and install it. It won't be great in a few years from now but it's better than your original version for now.

With the advent of android auto, google maps, waze etc..... I have not used a factory installed navigation system in probably 6 years. I would certainly never pay for a map update that doesn't offer real time traffic info without paying for the expanded Sirius/XM subscription.
