Front plates but don't want the hassle of taking it off and on?

I found the solution for the stupid state of Texas requirement for front plates, though, I'd rather not have it. There are some good ideas like magnetic vent clips and stow and show but you still run the risk of an ahole cop with nothing better to do than issue you a ticket and fine that can go towards a new carbon fiber lip spoiler. So what I did was took off the stock plate holder and put tape behind the plate so it doesn't rub against the grill. Then secured it with some wires so it doesn't move and rub. Then bent the bottom 1/4 so it contours inwards along the shape of the grill and you can clearly see the quattro emblem. Am I happy? No. Am I ok with it? Yes. My main goal was to have the quattro logo shine on. Oh word of advice, don't be the idiots that have plates sitting on your dash. You don't know when you'll get rear ended and have that thing turn into a projectile and slice through your passenger's neck.

Not a bad alternative- I’ve been running plateless on the front for 6mo and have had no issue with Dallas PD, or suburb PDs, as of now. You going to upgrade to a custom colour plate...like black or grey? That’ll help it blend in more, if you really want to run with the front plate.

In the 5+ months since I installed the RS-style grille and have pretty much continuously run with no front plate, I’ve never had a LEO show even the remotest interest in not having a plate. And anyone who remembers my level of paranoia from 6 months ago about not having a plate — even though I have the Sto N Show, I don’t really use it. The front plate sits in the floor pan behind the drivers seat.

My (unscientific) theory is that if the LEO looks at my front grille, they see that there isn’t a mount for a plate, so it’s not that I’m intentionally not displaying it, there just isn’t a place to display it.

At some point I may still be nailed and then I’ll tap dance. Until then, it’s not even in the back of my mind.

Hopefully we don’t have any Delaware Valley LEOs on this forum.

I don't think they're stupid. He sees the nice Audi grille and he's either "oh he's out of state" or if somehow notices that it should be there and it's not, he doesn't bother unless you're also speeding, driving dangerously, black, or have expired plates or whatnot.

Good for you, you are a rebel, way to stick it to the man! 🚔🖕🚓 Still doesn't excuse you for not having it. If an alfa romeo is able to have so does the RS5.

I'm not preaching one way or another and I'm not telling people cops will or won't. I'm just trying to be helpful and let people know of another way of mounting their plates and show off their quattro logo.

Would like to but it'll take away from my CF spoiler fund 🤑

For some reason, the police aren't enforcing the front plate laws for the hundreds of Model 3s I see driving around, 95% of which don't have a front plate.

Sorry to get your panties in a wad. It is just a joke. He mentioned it and I just played along with him.

Ugh - I got pulled over today by my friendly city PD to give me a fix-it ticket. In my city, non-violent crime like theft has increased and they are giving me a fix-it ticket? Pathetic. Now I have to figure out what to use to get it signed off. Time to do some searching on here.

Damn! You added to the donut fund! Well, they need the funds to since they are running low.

These two donut munchers must just be busy pulling over every Tesla on the road too!

I drove my previous car without front plate for 3 years and never got a ticket, but the law changed in the state I’m in and it’s not a fix it ticket anymore, can be hundreds of dollars and will go on driver’s record. So I ordered black plates and will most probably mount it on the grill using a slim bracket.

Ycore 03-18-2019 06:29 AM

I live in Dallas and have been driving without a front plate for 12 years and no cop has ever bothered me. Even the one time that I was pulled over for an illegal turn, the cop didn't even mention it. If they did, I would simply attach the plate to the passenger side windshield with some velcro-- no way am I putting the plate on the grill unless I couldn't avoid it.

I'd like to see a scientific survey of how long people have been driving without these plates before getting a dicket. My best average estimate is something like 2 years, based on previous anecdotal comments.

Also, I have a feeling that cops could give you more tickets for BS reasons like this if you're away from your home town, since you'd have to drive back into the remote area to fight the ticket in court and you're more likely to just pay up if it's not local to you. Is that true?

I quit using a front plate on my 1999 A6. Since then; '05 A6, '09 A5, '12 S5, '13 RS5, '18 S5 and '18 RS5. One warning on the '05 A6 and nothing else. 20 years and counting.

I've never understood the hate for front plates. Everyone wants to be Euro, yet ALL of the Euros have front plates...

Aesthetics, plain and simple. Plenty of Euros/Brits have removable front plates just for photo ops, and plenty more would run no front plate if it wasn't compulsory.

FWIW, my front plate hack ("magnetic vent clips") actually looks as permanent or more as your solution here, while still affording easy removal for things like photos if you want. Always the risk of someone stealing it, I suppose, and while I was able to test it in a lot of weather conditions and road speeds, I suppose it could still blow off without doubling down on the number of magnets I used ... but for $20 and 10 minutes of effort, it's much cleaner and versatile than tape, wire, fastners, etc.

I've never run a front plate (in the US), and lived in multiple states requiring one by law ... including Texas. In fact, I was twice stopped for speeding in the Austin area back in the early 2000s in my B5 S4 Avant with no front plate and the cops didn't say anything. Here in OR, the cops won't bother pulling someone over for a no-front-plate violation but it's heavily enforced by parking patrols. I live on the edge of downtown Portland and am in the city daily, where metered parking is a way of life. After four tickets over just a couple months, including one where the plate was displayed in the front window, I decided it was time for a solution. So I run with no plate except when parked at a meter and have had no issues since.

I’d gladly run a front plate, if it was euro-like and legal. Plus, it would look better, given it is longer and shorter than a US style plate.

Parking maids giving tickets for no plates? Is that an OR thing?

I don't want any front plates euro or Yankees style. Have you seen plates on the front of the new alfas or the last gen RX7?

IvanLZ 03-19-2019 09:02 PM

I run dark smoke plate cover for my black car. It really does wonders to the look of the car.

Thanks, already know of your hack and it is a great idea for a few and that's why I mentioned it,
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.aud...7bedbf1df7.jpg
but again, offering the fellow owners of another alternative since some of us have open stretches of road here where we can hit 120 and since it's flat, gusts of wind are common and I doubt the magnets can hold against both forces. Plus the title states the hassle of taking it off and on. I got a lot on my mind and I didn't want the plate to be another thing to think about as I drive off and as I fly through the desolate stretch of open road the plate flies off and cuts through the paint and then that's when I remember, oh yeah, the plate WAS on the grill. Or I forgot to put the grill on and Johnny Law in the city makes you add to the donut funds.

If the goal is to have the plates on but still clearly have the quattro emblem show, then this one method. I don't care about the plates showing in my pictures. That is the speedo on a desolate road in NorTex. And yes, the county constables generally leave you alone so long as you're not swerving like an idiot and the conditions are clear.

Kris Hansen 03-20-2019 03:41 PM

I understand the aesthetics quandary. It does make me wonder though, why does Audi trot out cars, even brand new models at their launches, with license plates on them? Is it because they are required in most places? I'm not a FAN of the look, honestly I'd prefer none as well, but where I live they are required, and it's a points ticket. I also try to avoid any reason to invite our local fuzz to a roadside chat, so I run the plate.
