Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I will check out all of the suggestions and report back with any developments.
I am really glad to hear that this seems to be an isolated occurrence and maybe just a glitch coincidental to my phone purchase that will not recur.
I upgraded from an 1Phone 6s 64G, which worked fine, to an iPhone X 256G running 12.1.4
I am using the $100 Audi cable that came with the car. If this persists I will switch to a genuine Apple cable. Thanks
Thanks. More good news.
Thanks. I am running the latest version, 12.1.4, and only using about 25% of memory 60G of 256G.
Good to hear. Thank you.

I have heard of problems with iPhone X / iPhone XS / iPhone XR with cables — especially 3rd party cables longer than 1M. Not saying this is your problem but I would check your cable first.
Checked. Using the Audi provided cable.
Also, check your security settings for connecting to a non-Apple device. It’s possible that the setting involving the iPhone behavior when plugging into a non-Apple device, since you said you just updated your FW.
Hmmm, Not sure how to do this. I've searched through the settings and do not see anything related to 3rd party devices.
Last question — Are you running Developer beta or just end-user iOS?
Apple 12.1.4

Does that mean you upgraded your phone from a non X version, or is that referring to an IOS upgrade? I have not any any connection issues. I have been running the latest IOS, and I updated to 12.1.4 today (which just came out for 2 zero-days exploits), and I have not used carplay with that version yet.
Thanks. More good news.

One more suggestion. Take a toothpick and clean out your lightning port, or take it to the apple store and get it done. Getting lint in there is a common problem and it has caused flaky connections for me once before.

Under Settings Tab:
Ensure the setting of USB Accessories.
Hope this helps.

I have an Iphone Xs and have had it happen a few times where the phone has been plugged in and shows up with the apple car play screen, then when I hit play the timer for the song starts to play but I hear nothing out of the speakers. Instead it just starts playing out of my actual Iphone. When this has happened all I do is unplug my phone and then plug it back in again and it seems to work fine after that.
