Is it just me or does the hatch kick open not work unless the car is locked?

It never opens when the car is locked, but it opens every time when it's unlocked. Is that a setting?

I can say with no uncertainty that the trunk lid on the Coupé will open in both conditions: Car locked & unlocked.

It opens when it's locked. It takes a few kicks for me to get it to open or close at all.

My 2019 opens locked or unlocked, but I do find there is a sweet spot. I have a harder time closing than opening.

It opens in either case, but the kick-to-open feature is generally very sensitive to using a precise technique. I can generally get it to work on the first attempt now, but sometimes I end up looking silly and need three or four kicks.

Works for me both locked and unlocked. I have made a habit of kicking twice because that usually ensures it works. The dealership told me the "sweet spot" is under the left center parking sensor. I have no idea if this is accurate (and it also contradicts the manual which identifies a larger central area).

I noticed if I stand too close, it won't work well. I read somewhere it's purposely done this way as to not accidentally close it on you when you're loading/unloading. Good to know when I put all my expensive fishing rods in, or rest it on the trunk while taking them out too.

Works in both occasions for me to. Think it is being in the right spot tho and not having any aftermarket obstructions (didn't someone add a rear diffuser and lost that function? - same has happened to me with a few BMWs).

So I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. I noticed that if the foot is too far from the bumper it doesn’t always work and I get better luck if I brush against the diffuser. Also it doesn’t work if you do it again too soon, you have to wait a little between attempts.
