Default Launch Control

Hi, I’m wondering if the launch control is bad for the car?

Curious what others say, but my gut is that due to the fact that there isn't any real /launch control/ on the B9, "Launching" should be done rarely, but because the rev limiter keeps RPMs at 3500 it shouldn't be too terrible for the car. It is funAF too.

Probably. That’s why cars that have an actual launch control limit the number of times you can launch....

No, they don't. The S5, RS5 technically don't have launch control, only the A5 does. Ever since they switched over to the ZF 8-Speed, that limit on launches was removed I believe.

I l'aunch' my car at least twice a week and I am still getting 23 MPG combined.

What do you mean by A5, S5 technically don’t have launch control? My A5 manual has instructions on launch control.

I believe the limit on how many times you can launch your car is link to dual clutch / DSG equipped cars like the A5. The S5 and RS5 are using the ZF8 which don't have a "true" launch control in that there isn't a clutch. You're just loading up the torque converter to it's stall speed.

Is that bad for the torque converter?

It's my understanding that it will generate a lot of heat which is not good which is why I believe the ECU won't let you just keep the gas floored at the stall speed / engine RPM forever. I think it will cut off after 5 seconds or something like that if you don't release the brake pedal and "launch".

The S cars do not have an ACTUAL launch control. So there’s nothing to limit. You’re simply dumping the clutch at 3000rpms, and the car “launches” violently forward—this is not great for your car, but peeps do it all the time.

Cars WITH an ACTUAL launch control program limit the number of launches and the parameters to which one can perform a launch to protect the drivetrain.
