Default low coolant / leak ?

I went to get in my S5SB with only 16,300 mi on it and drive home from work today and it flipped out right away with a low coolant warning and told me to pull over. I looked all over the engine bay (admittedly with a flashlight in the dark) and couldn't find the "overflow" reservoir detailed in the manual where it should allow me to see the coolant level. I tried putting in bottled water from work in the fill-up place near the windshield so I could at least drive it, and even with 1 L of water, I still got the low warning light.

I had no idea how to judge how much fluid would reach the MIN (or even if the sensor was bad or something) so I decided to not mess around with it and I had my car towed to my nearby dealer.

Questions:

(1) anyone have a similar problem? Seems like I definitely have a leak somewhere
(2) where the heck is the overflow tank in the S4/S5 engine bay to check the coolant level? How did I miss this?

It looks like they move it and didn't update the manual, see pic below:

that's where you add the coolant, but I couldn't find in the dark how to determine the min and max levels on that tank. are they there somehow?
